The honeycomb is the cellular design, which has been stuck together from strips of a paper, cardboard or other materials. The form of the honeycomb repeats the form bee's cells (from here - "cellular"). The cross-section of channels or cells can be hexagonal, rectangular (the "rectangular" configuration is a hexagonal honeycomb which has been over-expanded in the "W" direction, providing a rectangular cell configuration which facilitates curving or forming in the "L" direction; the rectangular process tends to increase "W" shear properties and slightly reduces "L" shear properties when compared to hexagonal honeycomb), and also to more complicated (so-called flex core: the flex core cell configuration provides for exceptional formability into compound curvatures with reduced anticlastic curvature and without buckling the cell walls; curvatures of very tight radii are easily formed; when formed into tight radii flex core seems to provide higher shear strengths than comparable hexagonal core of equivalent density). In honeycomb core distinguish L-direction (in a plane of sheets shaping a honeycomb structure, in a direction, perpendicular lines of connection of adjacent sheets), W- direction (in a direction, perpendicular plane of sheets which are generator honeycombs) and the T- direction (in a direction of an axis of channels or cells, i.e. altitude of honeycomb core). Extensive usage of honeycomb core began at the end of 40 years, first of all in aircraft. The perfecting of honeycomb cores and technologies of their manufacturing was determined, mainly, by requirements of the space engineering and came about roughly enough. Being by technology of a dual purpose, manufacturing honeycomb core soon began to take the market in other industries, and now honeycomb core are used rather widely in civil production. ![]() The honeycomb core consisting up to 95 % from air, has good
sound and thermal insulation, well absorbs energy. Depending on a kind
